…it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment…
All men are born physically just one time.
Each man is also appointed to die physically just one time (Job 14:5; Psalm 139:16).
At the time of physical death, those who repented of their sin and trusted in Jesus Christ alone for salvation are ushered into eternal life with Him (John 3:3; 2 Corinthians 5:6-8). Those who refused to bow the knee to Christ are ushered into eternal torment (Isaiah 66:22-24; Mark 9:42-48; 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10).
Eternity. That is a very long time. Yet, man is an eternal being. No, he does not exist from eternity past; however, he has been made to live forever. And every man will live forever, either in the presence of Jesus Christ, or away from His presence, “where the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.”
Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house– for I have five brothers–in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.
Such an eternal existence is unthinkable, and yet it is right and just for the perfect, thrice-holy God of the universe to execute His judgment in such a way on unrighteous, depraved, sinful men.
Even more unfathomable is the grace and mercy that has been extended to sinful men by this pure and perfect God. That He has provided a way of salvation, that salvation is wholly a work wrought by this trinitarian God, and that we can do nothing to earn it or merit it or keep it, is a glorious and tremendous truth.
And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Acts 2:21)
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people, if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead–by this name this man stands here before you in good health. He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone. And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:8-12)
Every gospel proclamation is a turning point in the life of the one to whom it is presented. And yet, in spite of God’s goodness in offering His Son as the way to eternal life, men still reject Him.
As time rolls on, the depravity of man deepens. Today, men proudly proclaim to place themselves in the seat of God. Playing as though they are the creator, and as though they determine the time of man’s death or even rebirth, they mock the holy God of the universe.
The Telegraph reports:
People who have had their brains cryogenically frozen could be ‘woken up’ within three years, a pioneering Italian surgeon has claimed…
Professor Sergio Canavero, Director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, is aiming to carry out the first human head transplant within 10 months and then wants to begin trials on brain transplants.
If the procedures are successful, he believes that frozen brains could be thawed and inserted into a donor body.
Hundreds of people who are dying or paralysed have had their bodies or brains cryogenically preserved in the hope that medical science will be able to bring them back to life and cure their conditions…
Could it be? Can man now be God? Man certainly seems to think so:
“If we bring this patient back to life we will receive the first real account of what actually happens after death. The head transplant gives us the first insight into whether there is an afterlife, a heaven, a hearafter.
If we are able to prove that our brain does not create consciousness, religions will be swept away forever. They will no longer be necessary, as humans no longer need to be afraid of death. We no longer need a Catholic Church, no Judaisim, and no Islam because religions in general will be obsolete.
It will be a turning point in human history.”
A turning point indeed. “Religions will be swept away forever…humans no longer need to be afraid of death,” says man.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He shall never be swept away, but those who reject Him will.
I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him! (Luke 12:4-5)
Men need not fear death, for those who have been saved can know without doubt that, upon their last earthly breath, they will be with the Lord forever, recipients of the great eternal inheritance promised to them. Yet these men who mock God, they should fear death only insomuch as it will bring them face to face with their Creator, the One who has authority to cast into hell.
Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels…’ (Matthew 25:41)
These men profess to be wise. Indeed, they profess to be wiser than God, but they are fools (Romans 1:22).
He who taunts God, he who thinks he can create life at will, is a foolish man. He is an arrogant man. And unless he repents and falls before the cross of Christ for mercy, he is a doomed man.
May God have mercy on the souls of such callous men. May He soften their hearts as only He can, and if He does not, may He be glorified in their judgment.
